US Wholesale Shipments Decline Twice As Fast As Retail Registrations
Through Q3 2007
[Stockhouse (Online), 01/09/2008]
US wholesale shipments of new powerboats fell at about twice the rate of
retail registrations for new boats in the US, according to figures
released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).
But the trade association says that could bode well for a possible
rebound later this year...NMMA President Thom Dammrich said that
the inventory reductions could be positioning the industry for growth in
the second half of the year. 'With wholesale unit shipments down twice
as much as retail unit sales, indications are field inventory is
returning to very manageable levels industry-wide, putting the industry
in a good position for a rebound in sales later in 2008,' Dammrich said
in the statement...
New-Boat
Registrations Down 3 Percent
[Soundings (Trade Only) (Online), 01/08/2008]
Registrations for new powerboats fell 3 percent in the third quarter of
2007 and 7 percent year-to-date through September, according to a recent
report compiled by the National Marine Manufacturers Association...While
double-digit declines may seem daunting, NMMA president Thom
Dammrich says inventory reductions may put the industry in a better
position in the latter half of this year. "With wholesale unit shipments
down twice as much as retail unit sales, indications are field inventory
is returning to very manageable levels industry-wide, putting the
industry in a good position for a rebound in sales later in 2008,"
Dammrich said in a statement...
Fact Or
Friction
[Go Boating (CA), 01/01/2008]
By Jim Self
The article tided "Good , Not All Oils Are Created Equal" (March 2007,
p. 24) has some valid points, it is also based on personal opinion and
not fact. The author states he "has been begging boaters to use the right oil
in their engines for years," which is good, but he goes on to say
"preferably an oil offered by the specific engine manufacturer" and "the
NMMA's requirements have stayed the same while the engines
approach space-shuttle-like sophistication."...First of all, the
NMMA oil certification committee (which consists of representatives
from nearly every major engine manufacturer, oil and additive company,
and aftermarket manufacturer) meets at least twice a year to review the
current standards and make recommendations for proposed changes based on
changes in engine technologies, fuel formulations and what it is seeing
in the field. The NMMA certification criteria has evolved over
the years to keep up with these changes...
NMMA Certifies Two California Boat
Manufacturers
[Sea Magazine (CA), 01/01/2008]
The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) recognized
two Southern California boat manufacturers for their completion of the
organization's Boat/Yacht Certification program...Mikelson Yachts of
San Diego and Navigator Yachts of Perris earned the "NMMA
Certified" designation for their respective marine products and were
among 17 national manufacturers also receiving the same honor.
Certification is an NMMA membership requirement beginning with
all products manufactured for model year 2007..."Our manufacturer
members are truly committed to this program," said NMMA director
of engineering standards Robert Newsome. "They understand the value to
both the industry and consumers, and they've fully embraced the
certification concept. We applaud our members for showing such
dedication to building quality products and making a commitment to do so
in the fore seeable future."...
Boating Industry Slump Could Signal
Recession
[National Public Radio (Online), 12/31/2007]
By Scott Neuman
Economists looking for signals of a recession might want to keep an eye
on recreational boating, a $40 billion a year industry that in the past
has proved to be a bellwether for the rest of the economy...Tom
Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association,
said people often take out home-equity loans to finance their dream
boat, but many of them started backing away from the market two years
ago. That sent sales down 6 percent in 2006; the industry is forecasting
as much as a 15 percent drop in 2007... "Boats are manufactured in
the United States, the components that go into boats are manufactured in
the United States and the boating industry employs a lot of Americans,"
Dammrich said...

Discover Boating Boasts Another Successful Year
[Boat & Motor Dealer, 01/04/2008]
By Carl Blackwell
2007 marked year two of the recreational boating industry’s Discover
Boating campaign, the consumer marketing arm of the industry’s
Grow Boating Initiative (GBI). Designed to spread positive messages about boating, get more people
interested in the boating lifestyle, and ultimately influence their
boat-buying decisions, GBI -- and Discover Boating in particular
-- has met with much success just a few short years into its multi-year
strategic plan... Since its April 2006 debut, the Discover Boating
consumer marketing campaign has increased awareness of the Discover
Boating brand to 36 percent, with more than one-third of those
targeted indicating awareness of ongoing effort. These findings stem
from a recent online survey conducted by New York-based Russell Research
Inc... The research also reveals one-third of non boat-owning Americans
who viewed the Discover Boating television commercials said the
ads would have a positive effect on their likelihood to go boating in
the future, with 48% of viewers saying they are "extremely likely" or
"very likely" to go boating sometime in the next 12 months...Another
factor contributing to this year’s increased brand awareness is the 2007
Discover Boating public relations effort, which has exceeded 200
million media impressions through the end of September…

Uncertainty Hits Boat Sales, Too; But We Still Look
[Cincinnati Inquirer, 01/03/2008]
By Karen Matthews
With 505 horsepower and a $120,582 price tag, it was
attracting gawkers at the New York National Boat Show. But would
anyone buy it? Thom Dammrich, president of the Chicago-based National
Marine Manufacturers Association, which runs the New York boat show
and others around the country, said boat sales are suffering from
uncertainty in the housing market and stock market... "We hope to see
more cuts in the months and weeks ahead, because it will stimulate
economic growth," Dammrich said. "It will stimulate the stock market,
and all of these things will make consumers more confident."...Dammrich
said there are about 300,000 new boats sold per year including yachts,
sailboats and motorboats but excluding canoes and personal watercraft -
in the US...

Providence Boat Show: Kayaks Are Hot As Powerboats Lose Their Luster
[Providence Journal Bulletin (Online), 01/03/2008]
By Tom Meade
Sagging sales may encourage dealers to offer some bargains on powerboats
when the Providence Boat Show opens in the Rhode Island
Convention Center today. Kayak sales, however, continue to be strong,
especially in the Ocean State, says Billy Stark of the Kayak Centre of
Rhode Island... Nationally, boat-unit and dollar sales rose more than 5
percent in 2006 -- thanks to growth in kayaks, canoes, ski/wakeboard
boats, and personal watercraft -- but the traditional powerboat segment
of the market saw a decrease in unit sales of nearly 5 percent to
291,900 total boats, according to the National Marine Manufacturers
Association (NMMA)... Nationwide, boat sales may have fallen by more
than 10 percent last year, according to Thom Dammrich, president and CEO
of the NMMA, speaking on National Public Radio, Monday...
