NMMA Helps Shape Rule On Paint Emissions
[Soundings (Trade Only) (Online), 01/14/2008]

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week finalized a rule to regulate area source emission standards for paint stripping and surface coating..."In formal written comments, NMMA expressed its view to EPA that the spray booth requirement would prevent boatyards and marinas from conducting outdoor bottom painting or maintenance touch-up painting," said John McKnight, director or environmental safety and compliance for the NMMA, in a statement. "NMMA also noted the proposed rule would force small boatbuilders to comply with what is, essentially, a plastic-and-metal-parts MACT standard, while major source boatbuilders are currently exempt from this regulation."...As a result of NMMA's comments, EPA made significant changes to the final rule, which remedy concerns for the recreational marine industry...

Outlook 2008
[Soundings (Trade Only), 01/01/2008]
By Leonard Bellavia

..
.Thomas J. Dammrich, President, National Marine Manufacturers Association: I think we will see a bottoming out and some slight improvement in our industry in 2008. Most experts are predicting slower economic growth and perhaps even a recession. Consumer confidence is very low as 2007 ends...It will probably be 2009 before we see strong growth again, but in 2008 we should see some mild growth for the industry. Fall boat show attendance and sales were strong. Is this the beginning of the new uptrend? I think so. Discover Boating is working. More people are interested in the boating lifestyle and taking look at boating - many for the first time. Baby Boomers and GenXers are spending recreational dollars. And, according to recent research, they would rather spend their money on a boat than any other type of recreational vehicle...
