Powerboat Market Hits A Rough Wake
[The Florida Times-Union, 02/04/2008]
By David Bauerlein

...But dealers face several obstacles -- the fear of a recession is making consumers skittish, the housing market continues to be weak, and high gas prices add to the expense of boating...Nationally, sales of power boats dropped nearly 5 percent in 2006 and fell 7 percent in the first nine months of 2007, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. The housing market's slide, coupled with rising interest rates, hurt boat sales, said association President Thom Dammrich. "If people feel less wealthy, they're less inclined to make a discretionary purchase," he said. Dammrich said the association forecasts a flat year for sales in 2008 with a turnaround in 2009. The Federal Reserve's decision to lower interest rates will make boat financing more affordable, but boat dealers still need home sales to recover, he said...

"It could be a real disaster for boaters and the boating industry," said Scott Gudes, vice president of government relations for the National Marine Manufacturers Association, which is pushing legislation to exempt recreational vessels and urging boaters to talk to their elected representatives. "Even washing your boat would be subject to federal permit," Gudes said...
