October 2007 MSR: Powerboat Shipments Down 13 Percent YTD

Traditional powerboat shipments, including outboard, sterndrive and
inboard boats, declined 13 percent on a year-to-date basis through
October 2007 in terms of unit volume and 11 percent in terms of
wholesale dollars, according to the October Monthly Shipment Report (MSR)
released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).
Advanced data available through December 2007 indicates last year ended
with traditional powerboat unit shipments down 14 percent and dollar
shipments down 9 percent, which NMMA president Thom Dammrich says
wasn't unexpected. "It's already been widely reported that our industry
experienced double-digit declines in 2007," Dammrich explains...

today, we are seeing pontoons pull skiers, tubers and wakeboarders. New

Rep. Thom Watson of Bath and endorsed by this paper) has been amended by
its sponsor to make further improvements over the original
proposal...Indeed, LD 2067 is the product of an 18-month collaborative
effort between the two Maine departments and the U.S. Coast Guard, the
Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons and it six Maine

creating bigger slips and fancier docks, and are revamping their
electrical systems to accommodate these jumbos..."We have had a lot of
inquiries for mega-yachts wanting transient service and permanent
dockage," said Russell Thompson, general manager of the Harborage. "We
want to continue to draw people to this coast and this will do that."
Catering to the affluent might seem counterintuitive in today's
lackluster economy, but in fact, mega-yachts are the fastest-growing

Optimistic As Boat Show Opens

The housing slump, higher fuel prices and overall uncertainty about the
economy are putting a dent into boat sales, but boat manufacturers and
dealers are cautiously optimistic that this week's Miami
International Boat Show and Strictly Sail, which both open
Thursday, will provide some much-needed tail wind for the industry. Boat
sales are expected to be flat or slightly down this year, said Thom
Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers
Association, which runs the show. That follows a 14 percent drop in
unit sales and a 9 percent decline in dollar volume last year...
