...The National Transportation Safety Board recently asked the nation's boat builders to increase adult life vest use by 3 percent a year for the next five years. So earlier this month, the National Marine Manufacturers Association made its staff wear inflatable life vests at all of its meetings and press events during the Miami International Boat Show...NMMA President Thom Dammrich also announced his group and several others are lobbying for a congressional bill that would give boat makers a tax credit when they provide PFDs...with each new boat sold...

The chief lobbyist for marine manufacturers is teaming up with BoatU.S. to fight possible legislation they say could lead to onerous permitting requirements for boaters. "This is drop-dead serious," says Monita Fontaine, vice president of government affairs for the National Marine Manufacturers Association...The ruling, however, could have unintended consequences for recreational boating...NMMA lobbyists have been in touch with EPA officials to express the boating industry's concerns...NMMA even proposed language to exclude recreational vessels from any potential legislative action...NMMA and BoatU.S. are now working on a lobbying campaign to get recreational vessels exempt from legislation...NMMA is also meeting with individual members of Congress and issuing legislative briefs to educate them about this issue...
