New CARB Emission Regulations Set to Take Effect in 2008 Beginning January 1, 2008, the State of California will introduce a new, more stringent set of exhaust emission regulations for sterndrive and inboard (SD/I) gasoline marine engines, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is encouraging all parties in the SD/I distribution channel...to understand their individual responsibilities and liabilities associated with the ruling. "Unlike previously enacted outboard engine and personal watercraft emission regulations, which placed the compliance burden exclusively on marine engine manufacturers, the compliance burden and liability for the SD/I regulation will be shared between the dealer, boatbuilder and engine maker," says John McKnight, NMMA director of Environmental Safety and Compliance. "That said, it's critical each party understand its role and know the required steps in order to comply with the ruling."...

Deck Boat ...With consumer confidence wavering, shoppers like Harry St. John are balancing the desire to get out on the water with the $25,000 average price of a new boat. Boat sales are down and the projection for 2007 is flat or down slightly from 2006, said Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. "Nobody needs a boat," he said. "It's a discretionary purchase..." The slump has also hit the boat retail industry's only giant - Clearwater, Fla.-based MarineMax - but the company seems to be shaking off the worst of it...MarineMax's success forced change among boat sellers, Dammrich said. "They really have set the bar for the industry in terms of delivering a quality customer experience," Dammrich said. "The most successful dealers are those who are selling the lifestyle and not just the product." St. John was impressed with the MarineMax sales pitch at the Orlando Boat Show...
