NMMA Gets More Time For
Boatbuilders To Comply With EPA Rule
The National Marine Manufacturers
Association today says it was successful in helping the recreational
marine industry preserve a one-year extension to phase out the use of
hydrochlorofluorocarbons in flotation foam. The extension gives
boatbuilders until September 2009 to discontinue use of the
ozone-depleting substance, allowing time for them and the supply houses
that furnish flotation foam systems to comply with the latest
Environmental Protection Agency ruling, according to the NMMA... ...A ruling in a federal lawsuit being heard in California could require new permits on all vessels - possibly everything from canoes and kayaks to oceangoing cargo ships - according to recreation boating advocates...The federal agency and the shipping industry tried to confine the permit process to ocean vessels that take on ballast. The court instead issued a sweeping order that extended to any vessel that discharges any fluid, including the typical 15-foot boat purchased for nothing more than puttering down the Delta on weekends, said Duncan Neasham, a spokesman for the National Marine Manufacturers Association in Washington, D.C....

Campaign
Crash & Sue's colorist Sue Lakso garnered
kudos from Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Wally Pfister, A.S.C.,
for her transfer and color correction of "Good Run," a short film, which
he directed and shot for Discover Boating, an education and
awareness initiative developed by the nation's boat manufacturers. The
poignant three-minute, 45-second film, which recently debuted as a viral

Big Outboards Reign At
Miami Show
In outboard circles, the big news that came
out of this year's Miami International Boat Show was big
4-strokes. Yamaha led the way with the introduction of a 350-hp V-8
outboard, and Mercury Marine, not to be outdone, unveiled a 300-hp
version of its 6-cylinder Verado supercharged 4-stroke...
LOWER TIDE FOR BOAT SHOW: Attendance at the
Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail fell 6% from
last year, to 137,175. Organizers attributed the drop to cyclical
variations and a possible slight dip in consumer confidence, said Cathy
Johnston, vice president of Southern shows for the National Marine
Manufacturers Association, which produced the Feb. 15-19 event. But
although it won't be known for about six months how much boating
equipment was sold, she said exhibitors generally were happy. "Inasmuch
as we always like to get as many prospective buyers through the door,"
she said, "what is most important is that our exhibitors sold a lot of
product. So I think the net effect will be very good."... |
