The National Marine Bankers Association recently approved a change to its by-laws, allowing associate membership in the organization. The National Marine Manufacturers Association is its first such member. "NMMA has always been a partner, and strong supporter of NMBA and its role in the industry," Jim Coburn, NMBA president, said in a statement. "We're proud to welcome NMMA into our membership ranks and invite other industry groups to follow its lead and become more involved with the association."...

USA eyes return of America's Cup
[USA Today (Online), 04/13/2007]
By Stuart Streuli

...The race for the 32nd America's Cup will start in earnest Monday in Valencia, Spain..."(An event like the America's Cup) brings prestige to your recreation," says Brad Read, the executive director of Sail Newport, a public sailing facility in Newport, R.I. "It validates what we do, validates going out on a Thursday night and racing your (24-foot sailboat)." Recreational sailing has declined slightly in the last decade. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the number of recreational sailboats in use fell from 1.67 million in 1998 to 1.57 million in 2005...

NMMA video shows new approach
[Daily Herald (IL) (Online), 03/29/2007]
By Mike Jackson

I’ve got to hand it to the marketing experts at the National Marine Manufacturers Association...Now NMMA has taken a new pathway, one I believe will give the organization more credibility with anglers and boaters alike. I recently was contacted by a public-relations firm that was working for NMMA, requesting me to view a video produced by NMMA’s ad agency. In the past, I received several e-mails from this group that were puff pieces, or, more plainly, information that has nothing to do with hunting and fishing. This time it was different...There are two Web sites you can check to see the new NMMA video. One is discoverboating.com, and the other is www.discoverboating.com. I sat through the entire video choked up.

The Discover Boating campaign is off to a strong start, with national ads appearing on cable television in nearly a dozen national magazines and on more than 400 Web sites, the National Marine Manufacturers Association reports...Since the 2007 ad campaign official kickoff, Web traffic on DiscoverBoating.com is up 26 percent from the same period (March to April) in 2006 , the NMMA says. This year Discover Boating has doubled the number of television spots, from 3,500 to about 7,000. Also, more than 180 million banner ads are appearing online...

Is Grow Boating's Dog Spot Barking Up The Wrong Tree?

[Soundings: Trade Only, 04/01/2007]
By Wanda Kenton Smith

The Grow Boating industry meeting in Miami was refreshingly different...The biggest post-meeting buzz centered on new dog commercial in the Discover Boating campaign. Apparently, research of boat owners uncovered a high degree of dog ownership, so one of the creative concepts that emerged was to bring the favorite family pet to a starring role in the print and TV campaign...However, as much as have a personal connection with my beloved pup, I have a hard time connecting the dots. If wasn't a boater yet ... and I just happened to own a dog and catch the spot ... would that scene make me leap off the sofa to call or go online to order the Discover Boating DVD?...The "biggest wow" of the year, however, is the free production of a really fantastic, four- minute mini movie titled "Good Run," underwritten through a grant provided by General Motors and produced by a multi award-nominated Hollywood cinematographer. The short film is beautifully executed, capturing the life of an aging boater as he passionately views snapshots from his boating adventures over time. Now here is a powerful emotional connection; I'm pretty reserved, but I had to choke it back, big time...The Discover Boating momentum continues. Let's hope we've got something to bark about when the numbers roll in.
