'Solution' Misses A Point
[Soundings (Trade Only), 05/01/2007]
By Thomas J. Dammrich

The April 2007 edition of Soundings Trade Only featured an article and editorial that demonstrated the enormity of the state business activity tax, or "nexus," issue facing our industry...Your coverage did an excellent job of exposing the shocking truth...This onerous burden will cripple many NMMA members with administrative costs, especially our small members who generate the most jobs and frankly make up the largest group of our members... However, we believe your editorial support for the solution proposed by the Multistate Tax Commission misses a major point. States should have no right to levy taxes against out-of- state businesses that receive none of its services...NMMA is lobbying Congress to rein states by enacting a uniform and reasonable definition of nexus that businesses can rely upon. NMMA supports legislation that would establish nexus only when a business has physical presence within the state...

Whether you're already a boating fanatic or someone thinking about getting into it, the Discover Boating Web site, www.discoverboating.com, is worthwhile internet visit. Boat Show Wake-Up Call Issued
[Boating Industry (Online), 05/04/2007]

Boat show exhibitors could be selling a lot more boats and accessories at boat shows than they currently are. That's the message being delivered as Michigan State University's Recreational Marine Research Center (RMRC) unveils the results of its recent boat show survey..."This data helps tell the story we've always known to be true -- boat shows play a significant role in the sale of new boats and accessories, but it also indicates there are significant opportunities to increase sales at shows and to influence potential buyers toward purchasing boats following shows," said Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). "This is a wake up call for our industry to improve our marketing and sales efforts with potential buyers during and immediately following boat shows."...The nine shows surveyed include the New York National Boat Show, Atlanta Boat Show...St. Louis Boat and Sportshow...

NUMB3RS
[Pontoon & Deck Boat, 05/01/2007]

...To show support for ongoing boating safety efforts, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) did its part last February at the Miami International Boat Show to show case new, lightweight, fashion able life jackets and the importance of wearing them while participating in boating and boating-related activities...."We wanted to hammer home the fact that life jackets are part of the boating uniform," says Cathy Johnston, NMMA vice president of Southern Shows and manager of the Miami International Boat Show. "Life jacket technology has changed dramatically over the years, and today's models are no longer the bulky, orange vests of years past. The styles are now sleeker, lighter, more stylish and, most importantly, more comfortable to wear."...
