National Marine
Manufacturers Association Coverage
The first big summer holiday weekend is at
hand, and this is National Safe Boating Week — perfect timing for Early
Show consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen to dive in with pointers to
help you avoid accidents...Koeppen ventured to Chelsea Piers in
Manhattan, where she boating safety expert Keith Ammons -- what else?!
-- hopped on a boat! Ammons, who's with the National Marine
Manufacturers Association (http://www.nmma.org/),
demonstrated new safety products for boating: an auto-inflatable life
jacket, a child life jacket, a canine life jacket, an emergency position
locator, and a carbon monoxide detector...Ammons says the most dangerous
mistake people can make when on a boat is not wearing a life jacket...
Twelve additional boat manufacturers are now officially certified under the National Marine Manufacturers Association's Boat/Yacht Certification program...To date, 214 NMMA member manufacturers have become NMMA Certified...The industry support for NMMA Certification has been overwhelming thus far," says Robert Newsome, NMMA manager, Engineering Standards...The NMMA Certification program covers more than 30 categories of standards, which vary by boat type and size... Says Hello To 'Hello,' Again
...At least half a dozen advertising
campaigns are using the greeting "Hello" as a way to attract consumer
attention...Among other "Hello" ads are...a campaign for the National
Marine Manufacturers Association that urges consumers to "Discover
Boating" with a song featuring lyrics like "Hello, hello, how are
you?"...
More than one in four Americans went boating
last year, but the National Marine Manufacturers Association, not
surprisingly, would like to see even more of us afloat. "The amount of
sales in dollars are up, but we've actually seen a slight down trend in
the number of new boat sales, as well as the number of people who go
boating," said Thom Dammrich, president of the 1,600-member association
of boat and marine gear builders. Dammrich said boating is not only good
for members of his association, however...The NMMA maintains a
Web site for beginning boaters, offering tips on boat buying, boater
education classes, launch ramps, maintenance and more. It's at
www.discoverboating.com... The Houseboat Industry Association (HIA) has elected officers and welcomed new members to its Board of Directors, it reported in a recent statement...Matt Harvey was elected HIA Chairman of the Board..."As the new HIA Chairman, I intend to further incorporate houseboating into Grow Boating Initiative (GBI) efforts," said Harvey. "We're looking forward to being partners with GBI and plan to be fully integrated into the Grow Boating and Discover Boating programs. Keeping houseboating in the forefront of people's recreational boating options is a major goal of HIA moving forward."...HIA is an official affiliate of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).
