Homeland Security Secretary Addresses ABC
[Boating Industry (Online), 04/29/2008]
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff addressed attendees at the
American Boating Congress Monday, the first full day of ABC, to
highlight the critical role the recreational boating industry plays in
the nation's security..."The recreational boating industry commends the
Department of Homeland Security for recognizing that a small vessel
security strategy must strike the proper balance between fundamental
freedoms, adequate security and continued economic stability," NMMA
president Thom Dammrich said in a National Marine Manufacturers
Association press release...
Speak Out
[Pontoon & Deck Boat, 05/01/2008]
By Thomas J. Dammrich
...Of the many issues facing boating safety advocates, getting boaters
to wear their life jackets remains one of their most important and
difficult challenges. Changing behavior towards and the perception of
wearing life jackets is no easy feat, and the boating safety industry
cannot do this alone...As the industry's largest trade association
representing more than 1,700 boat, engine and accessory manufacturers,
we took on this challenge few years ago and have been successful in
working with our members, the media, dealers and other industry partners
to help influence consumer behavior by modeling safe boating practices
through our marketing and promotional activities...
Buoyant And Profitable
[Ventura County Star (Online), 04/30/2008]
By Stephanie Hoops
...The 26-year-old has taken his father's inflatable boat business in
Ventura to new heights, more than doubling revenue in the four years
since Don Potts died on Jan. 26, 2004. With the $37.6 billion boating
industry experiencing its worst slump in decades, Potts' success seems
to defy industry expectations and even outshines the growth in the
inflatable boat market. New boat sales fell 7.7 percent last year, while
inflatable boat sales rose 17 percent, according to the National
Marine Manufacturers Association. "Across the country, we're seeing
inflatables grow in popularity largely because they're very versatile,"
said Kelly Kaylor, spokeswoman for the association...
Keeping Above Water
[Tampa Tribune (Online), 04/24/2008]
By Jerome R. Stockfisch
...Surrounded by water, Florida is naturally one of the nation's leaders
in the use and manufacture of recreational boats. It has the highest
number of registered boats in the United States at 989,000 - one for
every 20 state residents..."Clearly, we're going through some rough
seas," says Frank Herhold, executive director of the 850-member Marine
Industries Association of South Florida. "And the smaller the boat, the
rougher the seas."..."Like the ebb and flow of the tide, manufacturers
will increase or decrease employment," Herhold said. "We're seeing
that." Ellen Hopkins, spokeswoman for the National Marine
Manufacturers Association, points out that spending on recreational
boating is very closely tied to consumer confidence. Not coincidentally,
boat sales began to drop off by late 2004, mirroring the downturn in the
national Consumer Confidence Index.
To Stave Off Terror, Feds Issue Safety Strategy For Boaters
[New York Post, 04/28/2008]
By Eileen Sullivan and Scott Lindlaw
As boating season approaches, the Bush administration wants to enlist
the country's 80 million recreational boaters to help reduce the chances
that a small boat could deliver a nuclear or radiological bomb somewhere
along the country's 95,000 miles of coastline and inland waterways...On
Monday officials will announce the plan, which asks states to develop
and enforce safety standards for recreational boaters and asks them to
look for and report suspicious behavior on the water - much like a
neighborhood watch program. The government will also look to develop
technology that will help detect dangerous materials and other potential
warning signs...There are about 18 million small boats in the country,
contributing to a $39.5 billion industry, according to a 2006 estimate
from the National Marine Manufacturers Association...
Buyers Find Second-Hand Craft Float Their Boat
[Minneapolis Star Tribune (Online), 04/27/2008]
By Josephine Marcotty
Minnesota's love affair with boats is alive and well, and it's coming at
a lower price these days thanks to the tepid economy, the weak dollar
and the price of gas. Crystal-Pierz Marine held its first-ever used-boat
auction Sunday at Minneapolis Auto Auction in Maple Grove. Luke Kujawa,
president and chief operating officer of Crystal-Pierz, said he
organized the auction in part to scare up some enthusiasm for boating in
a soft economy and to loosen up a tight market for used boats...In 2005,
Minnesota had the fourth-highest number of pleasure-boat registrations
of any state. But after increasing by 10,000 to 20,000 annually since
the mid-1990s, the number -- 853,500 in 2005 -- has remained flat in
recent years, according to the National Marine Manufacturers
Association...
Free Boating May Float Away
[New Jersey Herald (Online), 04/30/2008]
By Bruce A. Scruton
...That last idea, a user fee charged directly to boaters who use the
lake, brought the most support, even though that support was lukewarm
from the public. The public argument is that the lake's waters are owned
by the state and it should be the state's responsibility to care for the
lake. The National Marine Manufacturers Association Web site
notes there were just under 200,000 boats registered in New Jersey in
2005. While the user fee wouldn't apply to all boats registered in the
state, it would apply to those boats registered in other states which
use Lake Hopatcong...

New York National Boat Show Gets New Dates
[Fly Fishing in Saltwaters (Online), 04/24/2008]
Following an extensive analysis of exhibitor feedback and in-depth
discussions with both exhibitor and show committees, the New York
National Boat Show will move to a new set of dates beginning this
year. The new dates are December 13-21, 2008, nearly two weeks earlier
than originally scheduled..."This change represents a significant
development in ongoing efforts with the City and State of New York to
relocate the show to a more favorable timeframe," says Ben Wold,
executive vice president of the National Marine Manufacturers
Association (NMMA), which owns and produces the New York
show...

Discover Boating, a national awareness campaign developed by the
recreational boating industry and managed by the National Marine
Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Discover Boating
programs focus on improving the boating experience and building interest
in recreational boating by demonstrating the benefits, affordability and

people in the United States enjoy boating. To find out more, visit

Miami Strictly Sail & Cruisers' Party
[Latitudes & Attitudes, 05/01/2008]
Probably one of the best venues there is for a boat show has to be the
Bayside Marina in Miami. Strictly Sail is part of the Miami
International Boat Show, which takes over the whole town for the
week of the show. With the convention center having all the "general
interest" boating stuff, like tenders, electronics, watermakers, and all
the accessories both power and sailboats use, it is the center of the
show. But the real life of the show is off in smaller "off-site" shows.
There is the TrawlerFest show, the mega-yacht show, the fishing boat
show and, last but not least, the Strictly Sail Show. This, for
obvious reasons, is our favorite...
