House Committee Passes Clean
Boating Act Of 2008
[Boating Industry (Online), 05/16/2008]
The National Marine Manufacturers Association says it applauds
the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee for approving
approved H.R. 5949, the Clean Boating Act of 2008, that will ensure
recreational boaters and anglers - including un-inspected charter
fishing boats - will not need federal permits to operate their boats..."The
Clean Boating Act is a bipartisan, good government solution to a looming
administrative and legal crisis for boaters across America," Scott
Gudes, NMMA vice president of Government Relations, said in a
press release..."The Committee has done good work in passing this
legislation," said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. "Now it is time
for Congress to swiftly pass the Clean Boating Act of 2008 to not only
preserve one of America's favorite ways to enjoy the great outdoors, but
also the American marine manufacturing industry that provides hundreds
of thousands jobs in this country. America's boaters want to protect our
natural resources and deserve to enjoy the outdoors without federal red
tape and excessive legal jeopardy."
Rand McNally: Some Road Travel Affected By High Gas
Prices
[MediaPost (Online), 05/27/2008]
By Aaron Baar
As gas prices increased into Memorial Day weekend--the traditional start
of the summer travel season--consumers admit those rising prices are
having an effect on their summer travel plans, although perhaps not as
much as one might expect...Meanwhile, at those water destinations,
boaters are expected to remain on the water. According to the
National Marine Manufacturers Association, only 1% of 2,400 boaters
surveyed said they did not plan to take their boats on the water due to
the rising cost of gasoline. The survey also showed that only 3% of
boaters last year opted not to take their boats out because of fuel
costs. "Rising fuel costs have certainly shifted boater habits, causing
them to take shorter trips and reduce cruising speeds, but we expect
boaters' passion for the lifestyle to continue to lead them to the water
this summer," said NMMA president Thom Dammrich, in a statement.

Boating. "Steve has been involved in NMMA's efforts to grow
boating since they began in the late 1990's," said NMMA president
Thom Dammrich in a statement. "He has been a key player who has been
very effective in building and maintaining industry support for the
Grow Boating Initiative. Given his passion for and understanding of
boating, I know Steve will be a strong contributor to the boating
industry throughout his career."...

Marine Manufacturing Association Inspection
[Brunswick (Online), 05/28/2008]
Sea Ray Boats' Tellico Lake facility hit a high mark recently when it
achieved a perfect score from the National Marine Manufacturers
Association (NMMA) during a comprehensive inspection. The
routine audit was conducted as part of the NMMA Certification
program, which covers more than 30 categories of standards set by the
American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC)...“Product quality has always played a major role in our plants. We at Sea
Ray consider it a way of life,” says Rick Stone, president of Sea Ray.
“Our employees are always striving to achieve record-setting milestones,
but to be the first in the marine industry to get a perfect score from
an NMMA inspection is a truly noteworthy accomplishment. We're
very proud of our Tellico workers.”...
Boaters, Like Motorists, Recoil At High Fuel Costs
[Boston Herald (Online), 05/26/2008]
By Associated Press
...Rising fuel prices are extending the pain to the boating, recreation
and tourism industries. Nationally, the slow economy and rising fuel
costs have cut into the margins of the boat industry. Powerboat sales
dropped about 10 percent last year, the National Marine
Manufacturers' Association said...The boat industry has adopted a
marketing strategy highlighting "lifestyles choice" that can be enjoyed
whether or not the motors are running...Don MacKenzie, general manager
at Boats Inc. and president of the Connecticut Marine Trades
Association, promotes marinas as a destination..."Of course gas prices
are a factor for boaters in a year like this, and they'll have to budget
for that," he said. "But a boater doesn't have to go anywhere or use gas
if he chooses not to. Spending time by the pool, visiting a local
restaurant or just falling asleep on your own boat is a big part of the
lifestyle."...
Anglers Not Happy With ASA's Lack Of Support
[Asbury Park Sunday Press, 05/18/2008]
By John Geiser
More and more fishermen are annoyed with the American Sportfishing
Association for its failure to support flexibility in fisheries
management.
The ASA recently came out with a six-point program that it feels is a
better answer to the problems in fisheries management than H.R. 5425 or
the Flexibility in Rebuilding American Fisheries Act of 2008, sponsored
by Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J...Numerous organizations, including the
National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Marine
Retailers Association of America, have come out in support of Pallone's
bill, but the ASA has refused to add its clout...

N.Y. Show Opts Out Of Holidays
[Soundings (Trade Only), 05/01/2008]
By JoAnn Goddard
Ringing in the New Year with sparse crowds at the New York National
Boat Show does not pay off for area dealers, so organizers this year
are moving to earlier dates in December. The National Marine
Manufacturers Association in April announced the show will he held
at the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan Dec. 13-21, rather than the
week of post-Christmas/New Year's holidays, when it was scheduled to
run. The NMMA and exhibitors hope the earlier dates will begin to
reverse a slide in attendance that has hurt the show since it was moved
onto the Javits Center calendar in 2003... Attendance has fallen off
precipitously since 2003 - from around 100,000 to 60,000, according to
David Dickerson, the NMMA's manager of state government
relations. The NMMA and exhibitors say the date change is
directly to blame for the 40 percent falloff. "We've had quite the time
to survive," says Dickerson. "We're very concerned that the show is
teetering because the economics don't balance out."...
