NMMA Awards Record Number
Of CSI Honors A record number of boat builders and engine manufacturers have received 2007 Marine Industry CSI Awards from the National Marine Manufacturers Association, NMMA reported in a release yesterday. A total of 64 boat and engine manufacturers--a new record-high--were recognized for excellence in customer satisfaction, as part of NMMA's Customer Satisfaction Index program. "Recipients of the 2007 CSI Award have worked hard to monitor and react to the ever-changing needs of their customers," said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president..."It's exciting to know more than 70,000 boat buyers took time this past year to share their thoughts regarding satisfaction with the boats and engines they purchased," says Terry Leitz, NMMA director of CSI Programs. "No other program in the marine industry compares in terms of the depth of consumer input and richness of feedback provided."

The National Marine Manufacturers Association and the States Organization for Boating Access have signed an official memorandum of understanding that promises to ensure a much closer working relationship between the two organizations moving forward, the groups said in a press release yesterday. Under the terms of the MOU, which was signed June 19 at the Small Vessel Security Summit in Arlington, Va., NMMA will provide management services to SOBA...Bernice McArdle, NMMA director of Affiliates, will serve as SOBA's executive director, implementing plans and programs the SOBA board approves. "There are so many synergies between the goals of NMMA and SOBA that it just made sense to forge a stronger alliance and working relationship," said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. "Together, the two groups will combine their greatest strengths and help lead the charge to not only protect, but also grow boating access."...

The National Marine Manufacturers
Association (NMMA) is currently accepting nominations for the
24th Annual Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award. The award,
sponsored by NMMA's Accessory Manufacturers Division (AMD) Board
of Directors, honors the memory of Freedman, a former NMMA Shows
Committee chairman and active association member who helped found the
association in 1979. It will be presented this year during the 2007
International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX), taking place
October 10-12 in Miami..."The Freedman Award is the highest possible
honor a member of the marine accessories community can receive," says
Jason Pajonk, president of Taylor Made Products and chairman of
NMMA's AMD Board. "To be recognized with such an esteemed award is a
true testament to an individual's dedication and commitment to both
their respective business and the industry at large."...
The U.S. Congress has voted overwhelmingly
to designate July 1 as National Boating Day in recognition and
celebration of the important role recreational boating plays in the
lives and health of the nation's estimated 73 million boaters and the
economy, the National Marine Manufacturers Association reported
in a statement this morning...In their respective resolutions
designating July 1 as National Boating Day, the U.S. House of
Representatives and Senate commended the recreational boating industry
and community for their responsible stewardship of the environment and
marine resources, according to NMMA..."Not only does recreational
boating create real business opportunities and jobs, it's a way for
families and friends to connect and experience life on the water" said
Thom Dammrich, NMMA president...
In vacation spots from Buzzards Bay in
Massachusetts to Puget Sound in Washington, home buyers are increasingly
paying big premiums -- sometimes as much as twice the cost of comparable
properties -- for waterfront homes that come with their own docks...The
dock premiums come as boat-ownership soars. There were 13 million
recreational boats registered in the U.S. in 2005, according to the
National Marine Manufacturers Association, up 10% from a decade
earlier. As the number of boats has grown, so too has the dock-building
logjam, stirring up community feuds and petty politics between newcomers
and longtime residents...
Legislation introduced in the Senate this
week will give lawmakers another chance to address "hull splashing," a
process used to copy a competitor's hull designs, by closing a loophole
in current law that will protect research and innovation..."Protecting
the time and resources invested in technology and research to improve
our products is an important component for our manufacturers to remain
competitive in the global marketplace," said Thom Dammrich, President of
the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), the
nation's largest trade association representing the recreational boating
industry..."The legislation introduced by Senators Leahy, Kohl,
Whitehouse, and Cornyn will benefit the nation's boat builders and
ensure job protection for their 116,000 employees who manufacture the
best recreational boats in the world," Dammrich said. "The NMMA
will urge the Congress to finish the job they started and pass this
bill." Discover Boating Coverage
On The Waterfront: The
Best Spots For 4th Of July Fireworks
Once again, Discover Boating (
www.discoverboating.com ), a public awareness initiative of the
National Marine Manufacturers Association, has put together its top
spots for viewing fireworks. With more than 73 million boaters in the
United States, the organization argues that many people will be watching
fireworks aboard a watercraft. After all, nearly 90 percent of Americans
live within an hour of navigable body of water, according to Carl
Blackwell, Vice President of marketing and communications for
Discover Boating. Blackwell notes that boat ownership was up five
percent in 2006, and that viewing fireworks from a boat is a growing
trend. "You're removed from the busy schedule on land and able to spend
quality time with family and friends," says Blackwell. Many of the spots
that showed up on Discover Boating's list -- New York,
Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles -- are obvious choices. You can
vote for your favorite at the Discover Boating website by July 6;
the winner will be announced on July 13...
Dammrich sees brighter days ahead for the
recreation boating industry. He has to. Dammrich is the president of the
National Marine Manufacturers Association. And he admits the past
decade hasn't been great."Since 1997, participation in boating is down
around 10 percent," Dammrich said recently...Dammrich was speaking after
the NMMA launched "Discover Boating" - a four-prong
program designed to lure new boaters into the sport and "re-enthuse"
veteran boaters who recently have been watching from shore...But
Dammrich admits these are difficult times...If not fuel, then what is
keeping people off the water? "Computers," said Dammrich...
If you hop in a boat this summer to take in
a bit of nature, consider this: A few hours in a motorboat could be as
polluting as tens of thousands of miles in a car..."My boats are like a
tranquilizer," said Duffy Electric Boats founder Marshall Duffield.

boating in Minnesota," said NMMA Executive Vice President Ben
