NMMA Certification: Benefit or Boondoggle
The National Marine Manufacturers
Association wants all its boatbuilding members to accept and use its
rigorous, official certification standards to ensure safety, meet
optimum construction standards and adhere to federal regulations. Not
long ago, the NMMA adopted those standards from the American Boat
and Yacht Council...NMMA certification demands much more than
filling out some paperwork and sending in a check...Says Robert Newsome,
NMMA manager of engineering standards, "Depending on the boat
type(s), an NMMA certification inspector could spend anywhere
from minimum of four hours to a maximum of 15 hours, inspecting every
model a manufacturer builds. The average annual cost of $1,500 to 52,000
covers fees associated with the entire NMMA certification
program."... The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is encouraging the boating industry to learn more about the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s new proposal regarding emission standards, which is open for public comments until August 3, 2007. According to the NMMA the new rules will have a major impact on the boating industry, and particularly boat builders, gasoline engine manufacturers and manufacturers of marine generators..."This is by far the most comprehensive rulemaking ever imposed on the recreational marine industry," says Thom Dammrich, NMMA president...

Recent federal efforts to thwart aquatic invasive species and curtail the nation's dependency on foreign oil could be major stumbling blocks to boating, according to Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. The NMMA is striving to educate legislators that the rush to incorporate more ethanol in gasoline will have a "catastrophic effect" on boating, according to Dammrich... Discover Boating Campaign
Is Making Headway
The National Marine Manufacturers
Association's "Discover Boating" campaign has been successful
at increasing awareness of boating's recreational benefits nationwide
and supporters of the effort have confidence that the program is
"beginning to deliver," despite a slight decline in boat sales
attributed to current economic conditions..."We expect that, as we get
into the third year (of the Discover Boating campaign), we're
really going to start to see some momentum: 2008, 2009 and 2010 should
be pretty strong years for the boat industry," said Thorn Dammrich,
president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, in a
Reuters interview...
...The Discover Boating marketing
campaign already includes print ads that state: "The fun of boating
starts at less than $10,000, and boats bought from dealerships can be
easily financed," for example. And its e-mail newsletter goes even
further, touting that an entry-level boat can be financed for less than
$200 a month. In addition, the National Marine Manufacturers
Association says it always makes a point to include entry-level
boats in its PR efforts, such as the Mobile Marketing Tour...
...Finally, things are changing. For the
first time in the history of our industry, we have mounted an impressive
media campaign, inviting people to "Discover Boating." Last year,
the multi-media effort was launched with a single purpose: to "get
boating in the minds of 14.5 million prospective new boaters." All the
ads lead consumers to visit the Discover Boating Web site. This
extremely easy to navigate site can help with boating activities, where
to use a boat, how to pick the right boat, and finding a certified
dealer in your area to learn more about boating. They can even order a
free DVD. If you haven't visited this site, put it on your to-do list.
It's a tremendous resource...

Missouri, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. Additional test drive
opportunities are anticipated, however, so if you're interested in
trying out different kinds of boats to see which may be right for you,

The National Marine Manufacturers
Association's Discover Boating initiative wants to help us
all grow our sea legs and relish the boating experience...The
National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is leading
the charge to help increase participation in recreational boating and
boat sales on behalf of the entire marine industry via an effort known
as the Grow Boating Initiative (GBI). NMMA is the nation's
largest recreational marine trade association, and as such has taken the
reigns to rally all segments of our industry together... DiscoverBoating.com, an integral part of the NMMA's Grow Boating campaign, was recently named as an Official Honoree in the Lifestyle Category of the 11th Annual Webby Awards... Discover Boating also generated broadcast coverage on Canadian stations. Please see Article Index to view excerpts of these segments. Boat Show Coverage
