NMMA
Issues Action Alert on boat permits The National
Marine Manufacturers Association has issued an Action Alert message
to its members calling on them to send letters to the Environmental
Protection Agency protesting a proposed permitting program the agency is
poised to begin developing…"We ask that you take the time to send a note
to EPA telling the agency about the potential negative impacts a new
complex permitting program will have on boating, the boating industry
and your bottom line," NMMA wrote in its Action Alert…NMMA
said it has already filed initial comments and will follow up with more
substantive comments on Aug. 6... Thom Dammrich,
president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, keyed
in on several environmental issues facing the marine industry during his
speech at the Bali Hai Golf Club & Resort in Las Vegas. Among them were
the rise of environmentally friendly products, ballast water, lowered
engine emissions and ethanol. "Being green and environmentally
responsible is mainstream America today," Dammrich said. "The green
revolution cannot be mistaken for a fad." Two marine industry organizations are urging their members to contact elected officials, asking them to support a bill that would exempt recreational boats from a new permitting system slated to go into effect next year. The National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Association for Marina Industries want their members to urge support of H.R. 2550, the Recreational Boating Act of 2007, which is co-sponsored by the co-chairs of the Congressional Boating Caucus, Reps. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., and Candice Miller, R-Mich… This story was

ethanol in blended fuels…Current research indicates that gasoline
blended with ethanol levels of 10 percent or higher can cause serious
dam age to equipment and create major safety, durability and
environmental issues, according to the NMMA. The National
Marine Manufacturers Association and the Environmental Protection
Agency are working on a proposed rule that will result in compliance
with new emission standards beginning in the largest regulatory action
in the history of the recreational marine industry…The rule is the most
comprehensive ever imposed on the industry. Nineteen additional boat manufacturers recently became officially certified under the National Marine Manufacturers Association's (NMMA) Boat/Yacht Certification program…”By July 31, all NMMA boatbuilder members must either be officially NMMA Certified, or nearing completion of the NMMA Certification process," says Robert Newsome, NMMA manager, Engineering Standards. "We are proud to report that as a result of the boatbuilders' hard work, this ambitious goal will be achieved." While all boats in the United States must meet applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations, boats built by manufacturers participating in the NMMA Certified program must also meet the more comprehensive standards set by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). Furthermore, to become NMMA Certified, a boat must pass rigorous third-party inspection to ensure they meet and adhere to all applicable standards, as well as maintain an ongoing, formal Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) program...
