NMMA opposes amendment on wood imports
[Soundings (Trade Only), 08/01/2007]
By Beth Rosenberg

Congress is considering a bill that would ban the use of illegally harvested timber and wood products by amending the long-standing Lacey Act, and extending its protections to plants, to catch trafficking in timber and wood products…Concerned about the impact on boatbuilders, the National Marine Manufacturers Association has joined with others in opposing the changes. "The NMMA opposes ongoing efforts to amend the Lacey Act, which would criminalize the otherwise legal importation of wood products where the imports are found to have been taken in violation of 'any foreign law,’ especially when the U.S. citizen is an innocent owner and has relied upon certifications of the host country under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species," said NMMA president Thorn Dammrich...

Website Aims To Highlight Marinas' Worth
[Miami Herald, 08/06/2007]

...Two national trade groups, the Chicago-based National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Association of Marina Industries in Washington, are planning to launch www.marinaeconomics.com. The first of its kind, the interactive site is designed to calculate boater spending and the economic impact for a general boating area, a specific marina or even a boat ramp site. It can be used to estimate the impact of a proposed marina or the loss of an existing one...

Palmer Marine Wins NMMA Certification
[Soundings (Trade Only), 08/01/2007]

Palmer Marine – manufacturer of Defiance, Shamrock and Tiderunner boats – recently became certified under the National Marine Manufacturers Association's certification program for boats, yachts, trailers and personal watercraft. While all boats in the United States must meet U.S. Coast Guard regulations, boats built by manufacturers participating in the NMMA Certified program must meet additional standards set by the American Boat and Yacht Council. Furthermore, to become NMMA Certified a boat must pass third-party inspection to ensure that it meets and adheres to all applicable standards. "Earning the NMMA Certified designation is a major achievement for Palmer Marine," said president Bo Palmer, in a statement. "It demonstrates to our customers we're committed to building a quality product and have the utmost concern for their safety and well-being.”…

Boat slump dragging trailers along behind it

[Soundings (Trade Only), 08/01/2007]
By Lisa Knapp

…Magic Tilt's boat trailers proudly display a National Marine Manufacturers Association sticker. The company is one of 35 certified manufacturers pledged to the highest safety standards. But there are hundreds of trailer makers out there who aren't certified, and the cost of changing that could run some out of business, says Gary Potter, CEO of EZ Loader and chairman of the Trailer Manufacturers Association. NMMA certification costs $1,500 annually, however, there are back-door costs to absorb if the manufacturer has to change production methods or lighting capabilities in order to be certified…Robert Newsome, an engineering standards manager, oversees the NMMA's certification program. Manufacturer inspections are handled by an independent third party, and the NMMA then addresses individual correction issues with the member…

Sailors fight potentially costly court decision
[Galveston County Daily News, 07/29/2007]
By John Ira Petty

...The EPA has appealed the decision, which puts it, remarkably, squarely in the camp of recreational boaters. For 34 years, since enactment of the Clean Water Act the agency has exempted "discharges incidental to the normal operation of a vessel." Sailors and other recreational boaters were left pretty much alone, at least as far as such discharges are concerned. The appeal, supported by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, is to be heard next month. It could take years to resolve...

…This is more than just a feel good thing: It's vital to recreational boating - indeed, to our very lifestyle. So, I applaud this summer's expansion of the National Marine Manufacturers Association's (NMMA) Discover Boating (discoverboating.com) program to include test drives designed to introduce people to the joys of being on the water…This is the beauty of the Discover Boating program, which includes all types of craft, from bowriders to sailboats…

Consumers

[Boating Industry, 08/01/2007]

…Nationwide Insurance provided some further insight into the differences between powersports vehicle owners' motivations, attitudes and usage in a study released earlier this year. The study demonstrates the importance of boating in the social lives of boat owners, compared to owners of other powersports vehicles. This emphasis on boating as a pathway to better connections between people supports the messages both the Discover Boating and Take Me Fishing campaigns have been trying to send consumers...

NMMA wins Silver Anvil Award
[Boating Industry (Online), 08/10/2007]

The 19th annual San Diego Boat Show was recently honored by the Public Relations Society of America with its 2007 Silver Anvil Award, recognizing excellence in strategic public relations planning and implementation, the National Marine Manufacturers Association - which owns and produces the show - reported in a release yesterday…This is the second time NMMA and c3 have been nationally recognized by PRSA for the public relations work on the San Diego Boat Show. PRSA awarded the organizations with a Silver Anvil in 2005. Considered the top national award for the public relations industry, NMMA and c3 were honored out of 855 national entries--beating out national PR firms, Fortune 500 companies and service organizations and associations from across the country--for their public relations work on the San Diego Boat Show. This year's Silver Anvil competition was one of the toughest in history, as PRSA received the largest amount of entries on record, NMMA said. "We're consistently impressed by c3's work and the results they're able to generate for the show year after year," says Carl Blackwell, NMMA vice president of Marketing & Communications. "We're proud to work alongside such a remarkable, talented PR agency like c3."…
