Mega-Yacht Flotilla Sails in Newport
One of the biggest
yacht sales events in the U.S., the Newport show in Rhode Island, last
weekend showcased boats of all sizes -- from small dinghies to
mega-yachts 100 feet and longer -- made by manufacturers from around the
globe. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association,
sales of new boats reached $15.1 billion in 2006, a 3 percent increase
from the year prior. However, preliminary numbers for 2007 indicate a 10
percent decline in new boat purchases under 60 feet…"The backlog in the mega-yacht industry is at an
all-time high," said Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine
Manufacturers Association. "People are even paying premiums to get
other peoples' build slot so they don't have to wait for their yachts."… The National Marine Manufacturers Association and Boating Writers International have selected the judges for the 2007 IBEX Innovation Awards. Award winners will be recognized during the annual Industry Awards breakfast Oct. 12, during the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center…The NMMA and BWI will recognize up to nine new products for innovation, plus one Environmental Award… This story was also covered by

Association of Maryland's (MTAM) 28th annual conference will be held
Sept. 12 at the Kent Island Yacht Club in Chester. This year's event
will feature Mike Pusateri of Vantage Strategy Consulting who will cite
specific examples of how the internet can be used better by the
industry. Steve Tadd, the NMMA Grow Boating director, will
discuss how other states are preserving access to the region's waters
through comprehensive planning, development rights and other efforts by
local jurisdictions. The conference will also include a presentation on
some of the opportunities for training your employees by Barbara Jean
Walsh, author of ProBoat E-training. A panel of MTAM member attorneys

representatives and media converged in Washington, D.C., June 19-20,
2007, at the request of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and
U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to discuss small vessel security in U.S.
waters…Cindy Squires of the National Marine Manufacturers Association
spoke eloquently about the economic impact of recreational boating,
citing it as $39.5 billion industry in 2006. "Boating must remain fun,"
Squires says. "If it becomes cumbersome, [owners] will leave boating."

In-water show lures hundreds
of vessels …The Tiara will be one of 750 yachts and boats of all sizes and prices to be showcased in the 32nd annual Norwalk International In-Water Boat Show to be held Thursday through Sunday. Jonathan Pritko, show manager, said 27,000 people are expected to attend…Run by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the show is not a trade show but a consumer event designed to sell boats, Pritko said. Prices range from a few hundred dollars up to several million dollars. The grandest, dubbed Queen of the Show, is the 70-foot Azimut 68, priced at $2.6 million…Throughout the marina yard, a series of white tents were set up for selling food, fishing gear, nautical gifts, inflatables and apparel. Americans still love their boats. And according to statistics provided
by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, they are not
afraid to spend money to use them. The association is a sponsor of the
Virginia In-Water Boat Expo and Sailfest, which opens today at
Norfolk's Waterside Marina. The show continues through Sunday…The expo
also will feature several vendors of boating-related products.
Representatives of DiscoverBoating.com will be available to help
potential buyers determine what kind of vessel is right for their needs… The Minneapolis Boat Show
announced today that the Uran family of Excelsior, Minn., won the 2008 "Bling
My Boat" contest. The newly refurbished boat will be revealed the
opening day of the Minneapolis Boat Show, Jan. 23…Uran was a well
driller in the Lake Minnetonka area. After his death in a work accident,
the family was forced to liquidate much of his business and personal
assets, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association,
which produces the Minnesota show. But family members said they could
not part with Uran's boat. The number of new power boats sold
in the United States has decreased all but one year since 2000,
according to statistics. The 291,900 boats sold in four major categories
last year, in fact, are the fewest sold since 1997. That's why showcases
such as this weekend's 42nd annual Tampa Boat Show are crucial. "It's a
primary means to market to get new boaters in," said Thom Dammrich,
president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. He
estimates that 40 percent to 60 percent of new boat sales tie directly
