...The Chicago-based National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)
was the subject of a rather negative front page story in the Chicago
Tribune in September that outlined the group's efforts to lobby Congress
on behalf of the boating industry...Monita Fontaine, NMMA's chief
lobbyist, said that she doesn't believe NMMA broke any rules, but
that the association is waiting for clarification "to make sure
everything is above board." By the way, NMMA President Thom
Dammrich was at one point scheduled to become chairman of the American
Recreation Coalition (ARC) following the retirement of David J.
Humphreys who helped found ARC while president of the Recreation Vehicle
Industry Association (RVIA)... |

Grow
Boating Effort Seems To Be Working
Leaders of the
industry-wide Grow Boating Initiative are encouraged by preliminary
results from the program and believe forward movement is being made as
the consumer campaign moves into its second year, the National Marine
Manufacturers Association reported in a release yesterday... notable
campaign highlight was Discover Boating online banner appearances
on CBS Sportsline's live streaming video Web casts of the NCAA men's
basketball tournament. The live tournament Web casts drew record viewers
and delivered nearly seven times more online reach than anticipated. A
sampling of target consumers, conducted by Russell Research prior to
March, found 1 in 20 had heard of Discover Boating. Following
first year advertising efforts, consumer awareness for Discover
Boating had risen to 1 in 4. Consumers responded favorably to the
campaign, with print ads reaching 68 percent likeability and television
spots receiving 76 percent likeability; ad likeability standards suggest
a likeability rating of more than 60 percent could produce a change in
consumer behavior...
Total attendance at the
8th Annual Toronto In-Water Boat Show, taking place September
14-17 at Ontario Place, was 10,118, down 4 percent from its 2005 total,
organizers reported in a recent statement...The Discover
Boating Centre continues as one of the Toronto show's most popular
attractions, offering free boat rides to those interested in learning
about the boating lifestyle and experiencing the joys of being out on
the water, said organizers. This year's Discover Boating Centre
featured nine boats, both power and sail, resulting in a total of 917
people receiving free boat rides -- a new, all-time high. "We're really
pleased we took a record number of people out on the water at this
year's show and gave them a first-hand experience," said Lindsay Rennie,
marketing director for Discover Boating Canada. "We hope we have
made them boaters for life."...
