NMMA Praises Magnuson-Stevens Reauthorization

The National Marine Manufacturers Association has applauded the passage of H.R. 5946, legislation that reauthorizes and amends the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Management and Conservation Act, NMMA said in a release yesterday..."I'm thrilled that Congress was able to pass this important legislation for our nation's fisheries," said Monita Fontaine, vice president and senior counsel, Government Relations. "This bill has been long in the making, and NMMA applauds all the members who came together and worked out a compromise that satisfies recreational anglers, many commercial fishers and the environmental community."..."NMMA believes the compromise language passed this weekend is a victory for the environment and for recreational boaters and anglers, demonstrating that the careful and sustainable use of our aquatic resources is compatible with preserving our environment for future generations," said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president.

Florida Can Still Boast Having The Most Boats

For the second year in a row, Florida ranks first in the nation with the most boats...Nearly 974,000 recreational boats were registered in Florida last year, edging out California and Michigan, according to a report released Tuesday by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. There's water everywhere. ... Boating is an integral part of the lifestyle in Florida. It has always been one of the top boating areas in the country, said Thom Dammrich, president of the Chicago-based manufacturers association...The manufacturers association has compiled the annual ranking since 1996, with Michigan or California claiming the top spot every year until 2004. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) announced last week an expanded promotional partnership with the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) to create a new feature exhibit for some of its consumer boat and sportshows...Take Me Fishing Centers will be unveiled at six NMMA boat and sportshows in 2007: San Diego Boat Show (January 4 - 7), Atlanta Boat Show (January 10 - 14), New Orleans Boat Show (January 10 - 14), Chicago Boat, RV & Outdoors Show (January 17 - 21), Louisville Boat, RV & Sportshow (January 27 - February 4), and the Des Moines Sportshow (February 14 - 18.)..."We're excited to join RBFF to bring a fun and interactive experience to boat show attendees," said Ben Wold, executive vice president for the NMMA.
