National Marine Manufacturers Association Coverage

Sweet Complicity

[Go Boating, 01/01/2007]
By Michael D. Telleria

...These three items, and hundreds of others like them, are part of the National Marine Manufacturers Association's (NMMA) boat certification program, which, since 1968, has been giving boaters peace of mind that the boats they buy meet a stringent set of standards with a simple purpose: the safety of you and your passengers. It's easy for boat buyers, because there's only one box to check: "Is the boat certified by the NMMA?" ..."Every year every boat that is going to be produced gets an inspection," said Robert Newsome, manager of engineering standards for the NMMA. "The reason is that the standards are continuously changing, and we want to be able to apply the most recent standards."...The next time you see that little "NMMA Certified" sticker, you can be secure in the knowledge that an army of people have come together to ensure that that boat is safe boat.

While Ms. Caliri shakes her finger at the manufacturers for failing to act, and the NMMA for failing to report on their adaptation of the new contract guide lines, what she fails to ask is: How many dealers that have been offered the new contracts have accepted them as the new standard?...So before blaming the NMMA and the manufacturers for failing to deliver, let's ask how many dealers have accepted the new contracts.
